For twenty years, the honest answer to "where are we eating tonight?" in Hickory Flat has been a short list. Union Hill Grill on Sugar Pike if you want a real dinner. Hickory Flat Kitchen at the Village if you want something in between. Big Easy BBQ, Old Country Place, Bedoe's, Sidelines when the answer is "somewhere close." Everything else meant a drive to Milton, Woodstock, or Alpharetta.
That short list is about to get longer at a specific address, and the change is worth understanding before it arrives rather than after.
What's Actually Landing at 6375 Hickory Flat Highway
The project is Hickory Flat Marketplace, a 14-acre, 100,000-square-foot development at 6375 Hickory Flat Highway from D&G Development Group. Ground broke in February. Daniel Hunt, D&G's vice president of leasing and acquisitions, has said the team is targeting a fall 2026 opening, with certain buildings and spaces finishing earlier than others.
The tenant mix is not a mystery. According to the developer:

- Onelife Fitness
- Chipotle Mexican Grill
- Panda Express
- Chicken Salad Chick
- Caribou Coffee
- Little Rosa's Pizza
- Noire Nail Salon
- Fifth Third Bank
The front portion is six buildings totaling 45,110 square feet; the back holds the Onelife Fitness building and one remaining pad next to it. Site plans call for more than 400 parking spaces.
Read the list carefully. Two things stand out. First, this is not a boutique lineup. It is a national-tenant convenience center with a gym and a hospital-system footprint attached, aimed squarely at the daily errands residents currently run in Woodstock or Alpharetta. Second, none of it competes with Union Hill Grill or Hickory Flat Kitchen. The Marketplace is filling a gap in the middle of the day, not the top of the evening.
That distinction is the whole point.
The Corner That Already Works
Union Hill Grill sits at 5060 Sugar Pike Road, technically inside Canton's mailing address, functionally the dinner anchor of Hickory Flat. Enjoy Cherokee Magazine describes it as the "Cheers of Hickory Flat," on the west side of Cherokee County surrounded by open land and horse farms, an upscale hidden gem locals treat as their neighborhood watering hole. The Bifaro and Brandsma families took over as the third owners since the restaurant opened in 2011, with the stated goal of keeping the Grill the Grill while modernizing the look and elevating the Southern menu. Hours run 4:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. Monday through Thursday, until 9:30 on Friday and Saturday, closed Sunday. If you have not been in a while, note the Sunday closure. It changes weekend planning.
Hickory Flat Kitchen is the other pole. It opened in May 2023 at the Hickory Flat Village shopping center, with co-owners Chris Taylor and Dan Vickery curating a menu that pulls from Taylor's Maryland roots, including his own crab cake recipe. Hours are 11:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m. Monday through Thursday, 11:00 to 10:00 on Fridays and Saturdays, and 10:00 to 9:00 Sundays, with an exclusive brunch menu before 2:00 p.m. on Sunday. Of the 36 plates on the menu, 26 are gluten-free or can be modified to be, which is a detail worth knowing if you host.
Beyond those two, the Yelp-ranked working list of what locals actually rotate through includes Big Easy BBQ, Old Country Place, Sidelines Grille, Bedoe's Bar and Grille on Hickory Flat Highway, Sugar Pike Junction on Lower Union Hill Road, and Frik and Frak Market for coffee and baked goods. Recent Yelp aggregations for the 6196 Hickory Flat Highway area consistently list Hickory Flat Kitchen, Big Easy BBQ, Old Country Place, Union Hill Grill, and WNB Factory in the top rotation.
None of those places is going away when Chipotle opens. They will simply be doing different jobs on different nights.
A Representative Saturday, Once Marketplace Opens
The point of a new anchor is not that it replaces what you already love. It is that it changes the choreography of an ordinary Saturday. What used to require two errands in two directions collapses into one.

The last row is the important one. The evening does not change. The morning and midday do.
The Park That Isn't Here Yet
The third leg of the Hickory Flat calendar remains on paper. In February 2024, the Cherokee County Board of Commissioners approved conceptual plans for the future Hickory Flat Area Park on East Cherokee Drive. The park covers 40 acres purchased in April 2022, with a plan by Lose Design that includes multi-purpose fields, ADA-compliant walking trails, a recreation center, playground, dog park, and pickleball courts.
The specifics from the county's own summary of the concept plan are worth remembering when you drive past the property:
An open lawn area, recreation center, concessions and restroom building, a multi-purpose field complex, a paved trail network, dog park, playground, interactive fountain, community garden, and 12 pickleball courts with spectator seating. The recreation center itself would include a gymnasium, indoor walking track, fitness center, classrooms, meeting rooms, and administrative offices.
The catch is the timeline. The phased project is estimated at $43.3 million, with the first phase at $15.9 million, the second at $9.7 million, and the third at $17.8 million. Funding and development timelines have not yet been finalized. Which means the park is a real plan on real land at 3552 East Cherokee Drive, with real design work behind it, and no confirmed shovel date. For a resident, the practical read is this: the Marketplace is a fall 2026 event. The park is a "next few years" event. Plan accordingly.
What Changes, What Doesn't
Here is the thesis, plainly. The arrival of Hickory Flat Marketplace does not turn Hickory Flat into Alpharetta. It closes the gap that used to send residents there for lunch, a gym class, or a quick errand. The character of the place, the reason people stay, still lives at Union Hill Grill on a Friday night, at Hickory Flat Kitchen on Sunday brunch, at the horse farms along Sugar Pike and East Cherokee, and eventually at 40 acres of trails and pickleball courts that have not been built yet.
The mistake some new residents make is expecting the Marketplace opening to redefine Hickory Flat. It won't. It will make Tuesday easier. Saturday still belongs to the older list.
